Business Consulting Experience

 

o        Hawaii Small Business Development Center Network (9/90 – present) Opened Maui office and serving as Center Director and primary service provider for this Federal and State funded program.

 

§         Launched SBDC Network operations in Maui County.  In eleven years of operations, provided business consulting to over one thousand entrepreneurs and delivered business workshops to over two thousand, resulting in an estimated cumulative impact of over $55 million to the Hawaii economy.

§         Taught first Internet classes on Maui (1990), created first economic development computer bulletin board system, created first web site in world for an SBDC and its clients (1994)

§         Serving on Governor’s Advisory Board for Community Based Economic Development, Awarded SBA’s Minority Business Advocate for 1998, Served as Hawaii State Award of Excellence (Baldrige Quality) Examiner (1998).  Helped SBDC receive this award in 1998.

 

o        Fisher Business Consulting , Maui Hawaii (6/89-9/90) Business analysis and implementation in the areas of finance, marketing, and operations for environment focused ventures.

 

§         Initiated and coordinated Maui Hotel Association Pilot Recycling Program involving 15 of the largest hotels and condominiums on Maui.   Identified over $300,000 in annual savings.   Project received Governor’s 1991 Energy Award.

 

o        Queens County Overall Economic Development Corporation, New York City (1985-1989) Served as director of industrial development responsible for retaining, developing, and attracting manufacturing industry employing over 60,000.

 

§         Helped over 100 firms directly with financing, worker training, tax incentives, energy programs, quality control, cooperative marketing, and general problem solving.

§         Researched and developed proactive economic development strategy of cooperation in the form of flexible manufacturing networks supported by government, educational and other community resources.  Initiated city-wide conference, “Retooling New York,” and launched successful pilot project

§         Described use of computer-mediated communications in above work as panelist at Networking forum ’89 held in Sandal and Tokyo, Japan.  Was honored to be one of 30 overseas guests of the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

 

o        Summit Management Group, New Jersey (1983 – 1985) Served as a consultant providing strategic planning and productivity system implementation for Fortune 100 firms.

 

§         Worked as primary productivity consultant on project where financial services firm was able to double sales from $500 million to $1 billion without hiring additional staff, and with improved worker morale.

§         Facilitated a computer programming school in developing a strategic plan and marketing program that resulted in a reverse in declining applications, higher caliber students, and a better reputation amongst employers; all with lower marketing costs.

 

Education

 

o        New York University, New York, NY  (1980-1983), MBA concentrating in Management and Corporate Strategy.  Worked part-time as a consultant, managing consultant, and then director of consulting for public service, affiliated with NYU Graduate Business School.

o        Yale University, New Haven, CT (1972-1976), BA in American Studies.  Worked part-time as a sales manager, treasurer, and general manager of the Yale Broadcasting Company (WYBC-FM).

o        Cambridge University,  England  (1971), Received General Certificate of Education at Ordinary Level in eight subjects as a student at the Lodge School, Barbados (1966-71)  U.S. High School Diploma from the International School of Bangkok (1972)

 

Born in Washington, D.C.   Raised in U.S. Foreign Service Family living in Italy, Ethiopia, Barbados, Thailand, Malta, and England.   Married with one son.   Writes, performs, and records music.
